How to Supercharge Creative Writing with Vocabulary Flashcards

Wordier vocabulary flashcards always include illustrations to enhance learning and make it more enjoyable. These photo illustrations serve as a valuable resource for vocabulary and creative writing. Discover how our flashcards can inspire countless stories.

Place Flashcards:

Use the vocabulary from our “Place” flashcards, which depict different locations, to set the stage for your child’s creative writing.

Randomly select a place card and ask your child, “Imagine you find yourself in this place in this picture. What happens next?”

These cards encourage children to think beyond typical story settings and avoid clichés like old mansions or ramshackle cottages. This prompt also reminds them that they can set their stories in foreign countries, which children often seem to forget.

People Flashcards:

Engage your child in writing from a different perspective using our “People” vocabulary cards. Challenge them to write a story from the point of view of the person depicted on the card. For added creativity, combine the person and place cards by asking your child to incorporate both into a single story.

The 3 Word Vocabulary Challenge:

For a completely original work of fiction, select three cards at random and task your child with incorporating all three words into the first paragraph.

For example, you could say, “Write a story that includes the words ‘gnarled,’ ‘clasp,’ and ‘pivotal’ in the opening paragraph.” He or she can choose to continue the story from there or select a new set of cards for the next paragraph.

This exercise is also a great way to check that your child is confident in using their new vocabulary in sentences.

Use Vocabulary Collocations:

Collocations are frequently used word pairs like “splitting headache” that we often use without even realising it. These word combinations are sometimes neglected when children learn new vocabulary. However, understanding collocations is crucial for your child to use words correctly and naturally in the future.

Some Wordier flashcards include collocations, such as “derelict farm.” Choose one of these collocations as a starting point for your child’s writing. Writing a story with a collocation not only provides a useful writing prompt but also helps your child remember how to use words accurately.

By utilising our vocabulary flashcards, you can foster your child’s creativity and writing skills while expanding their word knowledge.
