Each of our weekly 11+ vocabulary classes ends with a cloze test (which our students love).
Cloze tests, in case you were wondering, require children to fill in the missing word in the sentence. They test if a child understands both the meaning of the word and how it can be used in context.
Children who have simply memorised definitions without truly understanding a word will struggle with these tests, which is why many 11+ exam boards use them to separate the vocab masters from the memorisers.
The Importance of Vocab Quizzes
The cloze tests in our vocabulary courses always feature a selection of the words that were introduced during the session.
Whilst it’s great when children can answer the cloze test questions correctly, we always remind our students that it’s the doing that matters when it comes to a cloze test, not the score.
It’s been proven that short, low-stakes quizzes (i.e. quizzes that don’t really matter) are one of the best ways for learners to commit new material to memory. Therefore, taking a quiz at the end of the vocabulary class helps to etch all those new words into our students’ minds. Plus it’s a fun way to finish the session!
One of the great things about our weekly vocabulary courses is that your child can access the materials long after class is over. That means your child can retake the cloze test during the week. They can review the quiz digitally (using our free accompanying resources) or on paper, using their weekly vocabulary word-sheets.
