How our 11+ vocabulary course works
Explore new vocabulary
Each module in our 11+ vocabulary course introduces a carefully chosen set of ambitious words, designed for grammar school entrance exams, including the super-selectives.
Lessons build on one another, so learning feels steady, structured and meaningful.
Rather than working through vocabulary at random or in alphabetical order, Wordier students discover words through engaging themes.
Through these themes, children explore words more naturally and start to understand the subtle differences between them, like comparing monstrous behaviour with mere impish mischief.
In class, children are encouraged to think actively about each word, exploring it through example sentences, morphology, pictures and discussion. This helps new vocabulary feel clearer, more memorable and far easier to use.

Practise and apply
Vocabulary can fade surprisingly quickly if it’s only seen once. That’s why we revisit new words throughout the lesson and later in the course, so vocab returns again and again until it sticks.
We reinforce new words through short online quizzes in class and a cloze (missing word) task at the end of each lesson. This gets kids thinking carefully about meaning and use, such as deciding whether phone books are lapsed or obsolete.
By talking through each word, trying it out in a sentence and discussing how it can be used, we help children become confident in using “Wordier words” beyond the classroom.
Revisit and remember
After class, children can review everything they’ve learned in both digital and written form.
Each course includes access to online quizzes, digital flashcards and games, so children can revisit vocabulary long after the lesson has ended.
We cap off each module with a review session where words return in new forms, alongside synonyms and antonyms, so vocabulary feels familiar, flexible and easier to use.
Weekly vocabulary challenges (optional but recommended)
For many children, our weekly vocabulary challenge is their favourite part of the course, with some describing it as one of the highlights of their week.
Each challenge is based on the previous week’s vocab, giving children a clear reason to revise words after class and push themselves a little further.
We keep things friendly and supportive, celebrating personal bests as well as weekly winners, so children stay motivated without feeling pressured.
If you’d like to see how a Wordier lesson works in practice, you can watch a short preview below. You’ll see how we break words into meaningful parts to make definitions easier to understand and remember.

Why our approach works
Every part of Wordier Live is designed that way for a reason. The structure of each lesson reflects what research tells us about how children learn and remember new vocabulary most effectively.
👥 Interaction vs. reading
Reading is important for reinforcing vocabulary, but children learn words up to four times more quickly when they’re explained and discussed. That’s why every lesson includes interaction, discussion and guided activities.
✍️ Writing by hand
Writing by hand engages more of our brains than typing, helping new memories to settle more securely. In Wordier lessons, children write definitions by hand during class, then use digital tools to revisit and reinforce what they have learned.
🧩 Learning how words work
Our classes teach common morphemes, like pre-, anti-, mono- and spect, helping children to understand how words are constructed. Over time, they turn into word detectives who can decode unfamiliar vocabulary independently and with confidence.
This structured approach to vocabulary works particularly well for children who speak English as an additional language.
🖼️ Visuals and stories
We’re far more likely to remember information when it is linked to images or stories. Wordier lessons use videos, photographs and short narratives to help children connect new vocabulary to what they already know, making meanings easier to understand and far easier to remember.

Vocab classes and flashcards
The Wordier vocab classes have been invaluable for my daughter whilst preparing for the 11+. She has learnt many new words and more importantly retained them!
We also bought the flashcards which again have been brilliant and far more effective than any other flashcards we have tried. The pictures make remembering the word so much simpler.
I would highly recommend the classes and the cards.

We subscribed to Wordier vocabulary courses during my son’s 11 plus preparation in year 5. He found these sessions fun, interactive and really useful.
The teacher will explain the origin of the words and allows you to workout meaning of others.
I have now subscribed to the summer booster course and continues to learn new words. As the course is online, we’re able to do this during our family holiday, which is a bonus. I would highly recommend this.

Wordier has been an excellent top-up tool for my twin boys to learn their vocab. It was a wonderful group lesson that supported my boys’ one-to-one lessons well.
The mini competitions within the lessons also provided the healthy competition that my kids thrive on. The ease with which the kids can access the lesson, availability of lesson day options and access to recordings added to the efficiency and excellence of the service.
I highly recommend Wordier Live, as well as the colourful flash cards and book resources.
