WHY IMPROVE VOCABULARY?

Many parents and tutors believe in the urban myth that if you “read, read, read” then your vocabulary will automatically improve. In fact, research* shows that it’s the other way around – you must improve your vocabulary before you can comprehend a story. Reading then reinforces the vocabulary you’ve already learnt.

Rather than learning new words by reading, studies show that children need repeated, targeted practice with new words in order to improve their vocabulary. Once their vocabulary is broadened, they have a much better chance of doing well in a range of English tasks, from comprehension to creative writing and verbal reasoning.

So how do you improve vocabulary skills?

The best way to improve vocabulary is through targeted and specific practice. Just learning words and definitions is of limited value, though. In order to use a word correctly and remember it in the long-term, children also need to understand how that word can be used in context.

For parents, all of this is tricky to achieve at home on your own, especially if you’re short on time or are not very confident in vocabulary yourself.

Our first illustrated workbook includes a range of exercises, collated by theme, to teach a broad variety of vocabulary that will help with the 11+ and beyond.
